How to Make Black Eyed Peas In Ninja Foodi
Black Eyed Peas are some good ol’ Southern comfort food, and this Ninja Foodi Slow Cooker version is hands down our favorite on the farm. A quick ten minutes to throw together in the morning and you are set. No soaking of the beans required.
These Ninja Foodi Slow Cooker black eyed peas are part of our New Year’s Eve celebration.
It has taken some time to come up with the perfect recipe for these little beans, but I have finally come up with the best black eyed pea recipe.
Black Eyed Peas have a very unique flavor that not everyone in my family loves, however this simple recipe takes these beans from meh to Mmm Mmm good.
What are Black Eyed Peas?
No I am not talking about the band. Instead I am talking about a protein packed legume that holds an earthy flavor that is well known in the South.
Black eyed peas have been around since prehistoric times and have traveled around the world. They made their way to the United States when the first African Slaves were brought over. These beans have been used in soups and stews as well as fritters and many other traditional African dishes.
The black eyed pea goes by many names such as crowder bean or cow pea. The term cow pea referring to its use in cow feed in the early days.
It is said this dish became good luck to eat on New Years Day due to the fact that during the Civil War the Union Army raided the Confederates leaving only black eyed peas thinking it was animal food. This was a lucky break for the Confederate soldiers as they were able to keep themselves and their cattle fed.
How to Make Black Eyed Peas
This recipe is so super simple that it would be hard to pass up.
All the ingredients are dumped into the Ninja Foodi and left to simmer and meld together for eight hours on the slow cooker setting until perfection is reached.
Ingredients Needed
For this recipe you only need a few simple ingredients.
The most important of these ingredients, besides the black eyed peas themselves, is the ham.
We use a ham hock in with the beans. I highly recommend this as it imparts a ton of flavor! However, if you don’t have a ham hock, or ham bone no worries, the beans will still be delicious.
Regardless of the use of a ham hock, you will still need to have about one to one and a half cups of chopped city ham.
In addition to the ham, you will need one pound of black eyed peas.
Again I do not presoak these as they are going to be in the crock pot for about eight hours.
Then my secret ingredient is a can of diced green chilis. These little chilis give a nice little smoky flavor and just a hint of spice without being overbearing.
- Dry Black Eyed Peas
- Chicken Stock
- Diced Green Chilis
- Salt
- Butter
- Onion
- Diced Ham
- Ham Hock
Tools Needed For Black Eyed Peas in Ninja Foodi
Obliviously in order to make this recipe in the Ninja Foodi, you have to have a Ninja Foodi! However, you can use any slow cooker with the caveat that temperatures and times may vary.
The Ninja Foodi is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. You can do everything from Airfry to slow cook and everything in between.
Some of Our Favorite Ninja Foodi Recipes
Bringing it together
To bring this dish together, set your Ninja Foodi to the slow cooker setting. The temperature should be set to low and the time should be set to eight hours.
Dump the black eyed peas, chicken stock, water, and Diced Green Chilis into the Ninja Foodi.
Stir in Salt, butter, and Onion along with the diced ham and ham hock.
Cook together for eight hours, stirring occasionally.
What to Serve with Black Eyed Peas
I recommend serving up this delicious dish with some warm golden cornbread or Hoppin’ John Style over rice.
My daughter loves to have hers over a bowl of collard greens.
For our traditional New Years Dinner we serve these alongside Collard and Cornbread to really kick our luck into high gear.
Enjoy!
I hope you and your family enjoy this recipe as much as we do at the farm. If you give it a try leave me a comment and let me know how they turned out!
