Cornbread is one of those southern dishes that every true southern mama should know how to make. It is sweet, crumbly, and delicious. Cornbread completes any true southern meal. This recipe is super simple and takes no time to throw together. Just a few simple ingredients and you have a great southern side dish.

I love cornbread especially with potato soup or chili or split and slathered with butter, pan fried, and covered with honey. Yum!

What is Cornbread?

Is it a cake? Is it bread? One thing is for certain, it is delicious. Cornbread has been said to have originated with the Native Americans and was originally an unsweetened bread. It is a lightly leavened bread that uses baking powder verses yeast.

Cornbread has gone by many names throughout the years. Corn pone, spoon bread, and hoe cakes to name a few. Call it what you want, but just don’t call me late to dinner if it is on the menu.

Throughout the years cornbread has changed and adapted and has become an ingrained part of Southern Cuisine Culture. Now often a sweetened version of its former self, this dish is still simple and delicious.

Cast Iron and Cornbread

When making cornbread I prefer to use a good ol’ sturdy cast iron skillet like my momma used to. Cast iron is a great conductor of heat and bakes a perfect southern cornbread. Put a little shortening in the pan and heat in the oven while you mix the batter. When you put the batter in the hot pan, it will slightly fry the bottom making a crispy crust.

Making cornbread in your favorite cast iron skillet will also help to re-season the pan. So cornbread is good for your cast iron skillets like it’s good for your southern fried cornbread heart!
