Simple Sourdough Onion Rings Recipe
What goes alongside a juicy burger better than French fries? Onion rings! This simple sourdough onion rings recipe is the perfect crispy crunchy side dish and they are so easy to make.
Ingredients for Simple Sourdough Onion Rings
Onion rings require very few ingredients. There are four main components to crispy and delicious onion rings; the batter, the bread crumbs, the onion, the oil.
The Batter for Onion Rings
The amazing thing about having a sourdough starter is that you have a perfect batter just waiting to be used at any time. And I really love that this recipe does not need the starter to be recently fed or active and bubbly. I pulled mine straight from the fridge!
This batter comes together with just a few simple ingredients:
- Sourdough starter
- buttermilk
- spices- we used garlic powder and salt
That’s it y’all!
The Best Bread Crumbs for Sourdough Onion Rings
Bread crumbs help to give these onion rings a nice crunchy finish and helps to hold the batter to the ring during frying.
You can use any kind of plain bread crumbs, but we recommend sourdough bread crumbs to give it that crunchy tangy bite. Panko bread crumbs would also be a tasty crunchy option.
The Best Onion for Onion Rings
Sweet Onions are the best choice for onion rings. You want to select a larger onion so you get some nice big rings. The small tight centers can be saved for later use, like topping a burger!
The Best Oil To Use For Sourdough Onion Rings
Many sites will tell you that canola oil is the best oil to use, but I personally disagree, mainly because we do not use canola oil in our house. Many seed and vegetable oils have high amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids and while I am no scientist, there has been a great deal of research around these oils causing inflammation in the body specifically in those with arthritis.
For frying I recommend using avocado oil as a healthy alternative or grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil is a less desirable option, but better than something like canola oil. It is also less expensive than avocado oil.
How to Make Sourdough Onion Rings
Making Sourdough Onion Rings is a really simple process. First start by slicing your onions into thick rings, carefully popping the centers out to create individual rings.
If your onions are really juicy and wet, take a paper towel and pat them dry or toss them in a little dry flour. This will help the batter to stick. Set the rings aside while you mix up the batter.
For the batter, you will combine all your batter ingredients together with a whisk. This will include your sourdough starter, buttermilk, and spices.
In a separate bowl add your bread crumbs. Now it is time to heat up the oil.
In a cast iron skillet, heat approximately 1/2 inch of oil over medium high heat. You know the oil is ready when the end of a wooden spoon inserted into the oil bubbles. Once the oil is ready, you can start frying onion rings!
Take a few onions and add them into the batter making sure they are good and coated. One at a time transfer them to your breadcrumbs coating well. Then send them into the fry oil. Fry on each side for 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown all over. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with a paper towel so the excess oil can absorb.
Repeat until all the rings are done!
This recipe makes a perfect portion for 2, but it is easily doubled or tripled if you have more people. If you are making big batches, I recommend turning the oven on to 200 and keeping the rings warm in it while you work through.
Serve alongside some delicious honey mustard and a juicy burger for a delicious diner style meal.
