This is the best apple streusel bread recipe you will come across! It is a delicious and relatively healthy dessert that taste like fall.  Large chunks of apples stud this lovely quick bread.  The cinnamon, oat, and brown sugar streusel topping provides the perfect amount of sweetness and texture to make this apple streusel bread a delightful mouthful.

The Best Apple Streusel Bread

Apples are the quintessential fall fruit.  The crisp red skin breaking way to a sweet interior brings about thoughts of bonfires and falling leaves.

Every fall we find ourselves in apples somehow. While we usually end up making applesauce with majority of the apple, we always have one or two apple desserts that make the table. This year it is our best apple streusel bread.

What are the best Apples for the job?

I love working with apples.  They are one of my favorite fruits to snack on and bake with.  From apple sauce cake  to apple butter, apples are a staple in our snacking.  But choosing the right apple can be difficult.

What are the best apples for snacking?

We love to snack on apples, especially dipping them in caramel. Yum!

Apples are portable and virtually mess free making them the perfect snack.  We always have some of our favorite snackers on hand. In order to be a good snacking apple, it must be crisp and sweet.  There is nothing worse than biting into a mealy apple. Yuck!

Jazz apples are great for snacking!
Jazz Apples are a great snacking apple!

Our top three choices for snacking are:

  • Jazz Apples-  These small sweet snackers are perfect for the kids. Don’t let the small size fool you though! Jazz apples have a big flavor for such a small fruit.
  • Fuji- Fuji apples are extra crisp with a nice sweet balanced flavor.  These are a midsized apple and are great for slicing and dipping
  • Honey Crisp- The name says it all! Sweet, crisp, and juicy; this is my favorite apple for snacking!

What are the best apples for baking?

Surprisingly, just because an apple is a great snacker doesn’t necessarily mean it will make delicious baked goods.  We have picked our top four bakers that we think will fit your baking needs perfectly!

  • Granny Smith- This apple is the apple of apple pies.  Its firm texture and tart flavor is the perfect pairing and results in a delicious apple pie that doesn’t get all weepy on you.  This is the best apple in our opinion when it comes to baking a pie.
  • Braeburn- Braeburn apples are perfectly crisp and hold their shape well when cooked, making them a great baking apple.
  • Honey Crisp- Here we are again with this all star apple!  Honey Crisp’s firm texture and well balanced flavor makes it great for baking as well as snacking.
  • Golden Delicious- These apples are great for making applesauce or baking when the dish doesn’t rely on the the apple to maintain its texture. It is a wonderfully mild apple that hails from my home state of West Virginia!

The Best Apple Streusel Bread

This apple streusel bread came from a need to use up some granny smith apples that my momma gave us this year. She purchased them for a fall festival and never ended up using them so she brought them to us!

I am not a fan of eating granny smith apples as a snack and neither or our kids. I knew I would have to sweeten them up a bit to get them to eat them.  This Apple Streusel bread was the perfect answer.

I am telling y’all it is delicious and sweet with just the right amount of tartness that shows up in the apple chunks.

This recipe also trades out oil for applesauce making it a healthy alternative to many other quick breads.

Using Apple Sauce Instead of Oil

Apple sauce is a great alternative to baking with oil
Apple Sauce makes a great alternative to oil!

There are many recipes out there that call for oil in the baking world.  Did you know that you can substitute out the oil for apple sauce or even mashed bananas!

Oil is used in baking to help keep the final product moist and tender. Substitutes like apple sauce help to do the same thing!

What’s even better is that a cup of apple sauce has 91% less calories than a cup of canola oil!

Talk about a healthier alternative!

Our Favorite Tools for Baking

I have some favorite tools when heading into the kitchen to make quick breads. These are by no means required (well except maybe the loaf pan), but these will definitely make baking easier and more fun!

  • Apple Corer– this will not only make your baking life easier, but if you do any canning of apples, it is also a life saver
  • Loaf Pan– Wilton Loaf pans are my favorite because they are such great heavy duty pans for baking and really do a nice job with even heating
  • Paring Knife– A great paring knife is essential in the kitchen! Wusthof is the best of the best when it comes to kitchen knives. They have a long life span and maintain their sharpness beyond any others I have used. Definitely worth the investment.
  • A great set of nesting bowls! These Pioneer Woman nesting bowls are seriously the cutest!

Now let’s get into this recipe y’all.

Best Apple Streusel Bread Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 350  and spray a loaf pan with nonstick spray.

Peel, core, and dice your apples and set them aside.  I used Granny Smith apples, but any firm apple you have will work. Softer apples like golden delicious will bake down further than a firmer apple will so you may not have the large chunks that I loved in this bread, but the flavor will still be great!

In a large bowl  measure in flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and apple pie spice.  Mix well.  Once well mixed toss in the prepared green apples and stir to mix.

In a small bowl beat egg and add in applesauce and milk. Add these wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf pan. Set aside to make the streusel topping.

In a small bowl combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cold butter, salt and baking soda until crumbly and well mixed.  Sprinkle over the batter. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes on the middle rack.

Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the middle.  If it comes out clean, you are good! Allow to cool on a wire rack.  Store wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container for up to one week.

Enjoy with your coffee in the morning or as a mid afternoon snack!
