I love granola! It is one of those snack foods that I struggle to put down. This granola made with maple syrup is no exception. It is the perfect crunchy topping for yogurt, a wonderful substitute for conventional cereals, or a tasty snack by the handful. If you are looking for an easy granola recipe, look no further than this easy granola made with maple syrup recipe.

A few months back I decided to purchase a 25 pound bag of Old Fashioned Oatmeal from Azure Standard because it was a great deal. Y’all! 25 pounds of oatmeal is a lot more than it sounds! I won’t have to buy oats for years to come, but it did challenge me to think of new ways to incorporate oats into our daily diet. I started making a delicious oatmeal sourdough sandwich loaf that is our favorite sandwich bread and of course lots of granola.

This easy granola made with maple syrup has become our favorite especially as a topping for our homemade vanilla yogurt.

Ingredients for Granola Made with Maple Syrup

Old Fashioned Oats

Old Fashioned Oats are a must have. You can use any whole oat, but want to avoid quick cooking oats. Quick oats are chopped small for faster cooking and won’t give the same texture as good old fashioned oats will.

Maple Syrup

We are talking about real maple syrup here y’all, not pancake syrup. Pancake syrup is just flavored and colored corn syrup, we want the real deal for that deep nutty delicious maple flavor.

Coconut Oil

You can use any type of oil here, but I love the coconut flavor that coconut oil gives to this granola. Coconut oil is a great alternative to some other highly inflammatory oils that are on the market today. You could also use melted butter in the recipe as well and it would turn out delicious.

Egg whites

Egg whites give a nice boost of protein to this tasty crunchy granola and helps with clumping. If you flip versus stir when the granola is baking, you will be able to maintain nice clusters of granola. I personally don’t care if there are clusters or not, so I stir away.

Spices and Add Ins

In this recipe I keep it simple with cinnamon, salt, and a little baking soda to help with crisping and browning.

You can really add any spices you would like, such as pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice, nutmeg, allspice; really the list can go on and on.

We also like to keep ours simple with no additional add ins, however sliced almonds, pecans, or dried fruits would be tasty additions you could add before or after baking.

How to make Granola made with Maple Syrup

Making granola is a simple and straightforward process. It is literally add, mix, stir, bake, eat.

In a large bowl you will combine all your ingredients except the oats. This will include your melted coconut oil, maple syrup, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and egg white. Whisk that together until it all combines.

Stir in the oats until fully coated and no liquid remains in the bottom of the bowl.

Spread the mixture evenly on a baking sheet and bake at 250 for 20 to 30 minutes stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Allow to cool completely and enjoy!

Granola FAQs

Why is my homemade granola not crunchy?

Typically if granola is not crunchy it is due to not being baked long enough. If I don’t need my oven after baking granola, I will turn the oven off and allow the granola to cool inside the oven which extends the baking time and allows any residual moisture to be taken out.

The addition of baking soda also helps with crisping of the oats in this recipe.

It is also important to ensure your granola is completely cooled before you place it into your jar for storage. If it is warm at all, it will cause condensation to form which will lead to soggy stale granola.

Is it cheaper to make your own granola?

Yes it is actually significantly cheaper to make your own granola, especially if you are keeping it simple. Bags of granola at the store can be upwards to $10! I purchase my oats in bulk which makes it even cheaper, but overall you are saving significantly when you purchase the parts to make a whole.

You are also saving on ingredient count as well. Many store-bought granolas are not only costly in the money department, but also in the health department. They oftentimes include preservatives and inflammatory ingredients that are just not great for your overall health. When making granola at home, you can make small batches to preserve the quality over time and make great choices about the ingredients you use.

Is Granola healthy?

Granola is not unhealthy, let’s say that. It is strictly a carb, however the addition of the egg white does help to boost the protein. When you look at this granola there is nothing “bad” in it. You have a great whole oat with natural sweetener and protein. It really depends on what your view point of healthy is though. Granola is not meant to be a main source of nourishment, however this is a great healthy topping for yogurt or as a quick breakfast cereal in the morning when you are in a rush.

How long will homemade granola last?

This homemade granola with maple syrup will last up to 3 weeks if stored properly. I keep mine in a glass mason jar with lid to ensure it does not gather moisture from the environment and go stale.
